For many years I have wanted to go freelance but there has never seemed to be a good time. I’m sure you know how it is. As a dad of three children and a wife and home to support going freelance always seemed too much of a risk.
However it is something I had been thinking about for some time, and goal would be working entirely from home building software products around WordPress.
I knew I just couldn’t just leave my paid day job and say here I am world give me some work, that was never going to happen. But I didn’t want to work on and sell WordPress products as well as doing my day job as I felt this would be a conflict of interest.
So I decided I would become an IT contractor. For those of you who do not know an IT contractor, at least in the UK, is an IT professional that generally works at a client site on a project lasting anything from 6 months to a couple of years, sometimes longer. This would give me greater security than simply leaving my day job, but would mean that I could work on other projects as well without that conflict of interest.
So recently an opportunity came up to become an IT contractor so I took it and this is now what I am doing.
The process was interesting in itself as I set up a new company(more of this to come over the following weeks) and had to decide how I was going to manage my cashflow and record my financial transactions.
I also had a logo designed and went through the process of setting up a business account and finding an accountant.
So we shall see where it leads. I still want to become that WordPress entrepreneur and this is the first step in that process. Over the comming weeks I will detail some of my experiences here in the hope that other developers who are thinking about becomming businessman find it helpful.
